Litlife in NYC Schools
In our first year at 107, LitLife consultants worked hard to ensure that teachers felt comfortable and capable of implementing small group literacy instruction. In grades K-2 the focus was Guided Reading and in grades 3-5 the focus was on small-group close reading. Teachers learned how to use student data to pull small groups, how to hold flexible groups, the myriad ways to organize a classroom and run centers when teachers are running a guided reading group and effective lesson planning, conferencing and data collection to ensure the groups are effective.
The school grew from a 13% passing rate to a 22% passing rate in one school year with the help of LitLife.
This was due to a strong teacher focus on student data, student responses and increasing the level of joy and rigor in each classroom. Teachers were able to identify student strengths and build on those strengths to inform their instruction. LitLife consultants tracked conferencing notes, presented demonstration lessons and gave actionable feedback all to push forward this effort.
“We are so proud of the success at PS 107x and the dedication from each teacher that it took to improve on reading scores for the year. It is due to the exponential value of each small group lesson, each conference with a student and each book chosen for independent reading that students improved in this dramatic fashion. Great work!”
LitLife consultants have been focused on improving the literacy rates at M.S.X101 for the past couple of years. Through positive reinforcement and proactive social-emotional learning, LitLife has been able to help foster a community of confident readers.
The school grew from a 45% passing literacy rate in the 2014-2015 school year to a 51% passing rate in the 2015-2016 school year.
“We are so proud that a greater majority of students are now passing the state literacy exams as M.S.X 101. We cannot wait to see how they continue to grow as readers and writers!”
Urban Institute of Mathematics
At the Urban Institute of Mathematics, LitLife saw robust changes over the course of one year. The teachers in this school exhibited incredibly proactive leadership where principals took time to touch base with LitLife consultants daily.
This school saw a literacy passing rate improvement of 9% over the course of just one school year.
LitLife helped teachers to plan, debrief, analyze student work and use these analyses to ensure student growth.
